Words & phrases used in Aster's world, defined and explained.
CORE - An object analogous to the soul, found within every living creature.One's core is a bottomless well of Mana, allowing for reincarnation. Initially, the core is immaterial, it's manifestation and demanifestation possible only by mages.While manifested, one will be able to triple the mana which they both possess and can output. If it is merely damaged, there is no risk. However, should the core be destroyed, then the mage will permanently lose the ability to perform feats of magic and the capacity for reincarnation.
MANA - A resource used to perform any feat of magic ranging from reinforcement to casting spells.
ALIGNMENT - One's alignment is the magic they are capable of using, each person only manifesting a single alignment among seven.
GREAT ELEMENTS - The great elements are the four most common, being earth, water, fire and air.Only these four are capable of evolving into more advanced versions of themselves a single time.
NOBLE ELEMENTS - The noble elements are the least common to manifest, being light, dark and space.These cannot be evolved.
EVOLUTION - The process which which a mage of a great element can undergo a single time, although none are guaranteed to be able to experience it.Evolution occurs when a mage is intimately familiar with their alignment, often happening without warning. As it is not guaranteed, it cannot be forced and the precise conditions for it to happen are nebulous.If one experiences evolution, it is possible to slowly strengthen their magic via constant work.
MAGE - A person capable of manipulating their own mana.Animals cannot be mages, as they lack a mind capable of moderating their mana.
RANKS - An approximation of a given person's power in a seven-tier system, working upwards from rank six to zero. The higher your rank, the more powerful you are.
SIGIL - A magic circle, the method by which spells are cast, also known as a formula.
INTERNAL SIGIL - A sigil which has been absorbed into a mages body, manifesting as minute threads. Internal sigils can be modified during the casting process and are always of an alignment compatible with the caster.A pyromancer would be incapable of absorbing a sigil for hydromancy.
ETERNAL SIGIL - A magic circle which is engraved into a mages skin, cloth or is otherwise outside of the body.Any mage can use an external sigil, but they cannot modify any part of it during casting. Additionally, the cost of mana to activate one is significantly higher.
HUMAN - The weakest of the three great races, most capable in physical feats but sorely lacking in magical ability.In not possessing a unique trait like either the Demons or Angels, they are seen as the runts of the world.They possess no proclivity towards manifesting any particular magic.
DEMON - The middling of the three great races, average in both physical and magical ability, descended directly from the Devil's and are capable of living for approximately two-hundred years.They lack the additional appendage of the Angels and the hardiness of Humans, but make up for it with the rare and unique ability to see mana with their Devil's Eyes.They are most prone to manifesting dark magic.
ANGEL - The most superior of the three great races, possessing a massively extended lifespan and the greatest aptitude for magic, but also weak bodies which can last almost a thousand years.Descended from the Archangels, a great many angels are capable of using the Hand of God, an additional appendage.They are most prone to manifesting light magic.
DEVIL - Primordial creatures from the dawn of time, nigh-immortal and highly powerful, capable of using all seven alignments at will.The only way for one to be killed is the destruction of their Core, otherwise they will persist.
ARCHANGEL - creatures with origins similar to the Devil's, their only difference being inert and mortal with an indefinite lifespan. Due to such a weakness, they are nearly impossible to harm.
DEVIL'S EYES - A genetic trait passed down only to pure-blooded demons upon their birth, allowing for the viewing of Mana at will.While mildly strenuous on the mind, it does not take any Mana to use.
EVOLVED DEVIL'S EYES - A form of the Devil's Eyes possible only for those possessing the Devil's Eyes from birth.Manifested only during or immediately following a great magical event with the Devil's Eyes, it grants a number of boons to the user such as nigh-perfect mana efficiency, visual clarity capable of seeing specks of mana and highly refined control of mana at minimum. Others may gain other visual abilities, such as thermal vision.As the conditions for manifestation are extreme, it is only passed down through the Yamble family via artificial means.
TREIENNER - The world which Aster comes from, twice the size of earth with three moons.Also the name of the World's creator God.
ENIGMA - The order under which Aster's world operates, also usable as a name for the world.Composing this order are things unknown, bizarre things and a search for anything why much may aid unraveling the core of the Enigma World's order. The fact this it forces no particular trait upon the magic of its inhabitants means they are able to learn spells and abilities from other worlds.
